Crescent Lake Family Dentistry
Conversion of a 1920s historic home into a state-of-the-art dental office
Project Overview
Crescent Lake Family Dentistry presented one of the more complex adaptive-reuse projects SDF Contracting has undertaken. The building — a 1920s residential home in St. Petersburg — needed to be fully transformed into a functioning, code-compliant dental office while navigating both historic preservation requirements and the strict standards that govern medical facility construction.
The conversion required a complete interior buildout: new partitioning to create treatment rooms, a reception area, sterilization zone, and private offices, all laid out to meet the operational flow of a modern dental practice. Medical-grade mechanical systems were designed and installed, including HVAC with appropriate filtration, plumbing configured for dental equipment, and electrical service sufficient to support the full suite of clinical technology.
ADA compliance was integrated throughout the design, from accessible entry and restroom facilities to treatment room dimensions and door clearances. Coordination with St. Petersburg's building inspectors was continuous and exacting given the historic character of the structure and the change of use involved.
The result was a finished dental office that met every regulatory standard while honoring the architectural character of the original home. The city inspector's unsolicited remark — that SDF was among the best contractors in the Tampa Bay area — reflects the level of craftsmanship and professionalism the team brought to every phase of this project.
“When the city inspector pulled me aside and told us we have one of the best contractors in the Tampa Bay area, I knew we made a wise decision selecting Shawn Fernald, the owner of SDF Contracting. We interviewed over 10 well-known and established contractors in the area before we made our decision. My father is a retired contractor so we held very high standards when selecting a general contractor, especially with the scope of work that needed to be done. We converted a 1920 house to a dental office and they did a phenomenal job from start to finish. The quality, attention to detail and craftsmanship they put in to this project was incredible. They definitely exceeded our expectations.”
